Stalag 17 () cast and crew credits, including actors, actresses, directors, writers and more. Stalag 17 saw director Billy Wilder and actor William Holden work together again after their huge success with Sunset Boulevard. The movie focuses upon a German Luftwaffe (Air Force) prisoner of war (POWs) camp called Stalag 17 towards the end of World War II. It's a dreary Christmas for the American POWs in Stalag For the men in Barracks 4, all sergeants, have to deal with a grave problem - there seems to be a security leak. The Germans always seem to be forewarned about escapes and in the most recent attempt the two men, Manfredi and Johnson, walked straight into a trap and were killed. At Stalag B, one of the most notorious German prisoner-of-war camps, the American fliers were herded from the train to the bleak outpost about a mile or so away. They were quickly processed—deloused, shaved, and assigned a number—and released into the wide compound to find a bed in one of the barracks. Stalag 17 survives the jump from stage to screen with flying colors, thanks to Billy Wilder's typically sterling direction and a darkly funny script. Cruise Tom three weeks later, guards halted the four-mile-long column and ordered the Americans to make camp among the tall pines of the Leach Forest. Black Mirror: Season 5. Across eastern Germany the Nazis had already begun death marches, herding thousands of suffering political prisoners and Allied captives west toward approaching American forces, from whom the Germans expected better treatment than from the dreaded Red Army.

Finally, the Americans of Stalag B were told to gather their meager possessions and prepare to move out. On April 8, , the gates of the American compounds swung open, and 4, filthy, scrawny, and hungry airmen stumbled out onto the road west.

About sick prisoners stayed behind, and were liberated by Russians on May 9. If the men were relieved to be out of their pen, they quickly discovered that life on the march was no better, or safer.

Feet crammed into worn-out leather boots or camp-issued wooden clogs swelled, bled, and blistered. Only the nearness of freedom drove many on.

Food remained scarce. Guards provided little more than a few uncooked potatoes. At night, healthier prisoners prowled nearby fields and farms for anything edible.

Back on the road early each morning, the columns dodged increasing numbers of rumbling German vehicles, and the wide-eyed Americans stared in horror as they passed living skeletons in striped pajamas with yellow stars on them.

Perhaps three weeks later, guards halted the four-mile-long column and ordered the Americans to make camp among the tall pines of the Leach Forest.

There, in hastily improvised shelters, the men shivered, waiting for deliverance. Finally, as May dawned, relief arrived in the rugged jeeps and hulking Sherman tanks of the 13th Armored Division.

The gaunt prisoners felt lucky to see the men known as the Black Cats. Their long ordeal was over.

Soon after the SS took control of the camps, most of the regular German army guards were removed and sent to fight the Soviet forces in the east.

They were replaced by Volksturm Home Guard - rag-tag units of local conscripts, old men and other soldiers unfit for combat duty.

By early , the advance of the Soviet army from the east and the Allied bombing of the roads and railroads all around the area of Stalag XVII B had greatly reduced the ability of the Germans to get food and other supplies to the guards and prisoners there, making the plight of the prisoners even worse.

German guards began stealing the prisoners' Red Cross food parcels and making threats to kill all the prisoners. As the Soviet army got closer to the camp, the German guards decided to force the American, British and French prisoners to walk west along the Danube river toward American forces.

The Germans reasoned that it would be far better to surrender to the Americans than to the Russians. The forced march across Austria began in early April, Stalag XVII B.

History of Stalag XVII B. Sefton considers what to do. If he exposes Price, the Germans will simply remove him and plant him in another camp. Killing him could expose the entire barracks to retaliatory execution.

On Christmas Day, the men find out that SS men are coming to take Dunbar to Berlin for his sabotage. They create a diversion, free Dunbar, and hide him in the Water Tower.

Nobody but Hoffy, the compound chief, knows where he is. The Germans, despite extensive efforts, are unable to find Dunbar. After von Scherbach threatens to raze the camp if necessary, the men decide one of them must get Dunbar out.

Price volunteers, but then Sefton accuses him of being a spy. Sefton asks him, "When was Pearl Harbor? Without thinking, Price answers p.

Sefton then reaches into Price's jacket pocket and extracts the "mailbox" used to exchange messages with the Germans, a hollowed-out black chess queen.

Sefton decides to take Dunbar out himself because he likes the odds and the expected reward from Dunbar's family.

The men give Sefton enough time to get Dunbar out of the water tower above one of the latrines, then throw Price out into the yard with tin cans tied to his legs.

The ruse works: Price is killed in a hail of bullets, creating a diversion that allows Sefton and Dunbar to cut through the barbed wire and escape.

May 21, A group of American POWs discovers that there is an informant in their midst. Kind of a war movie lite, Stalag 17 is more entertaining than moving and more delightful than most war films typically are.

William Holden's characteristic insouciance fits right in, and the rest of the cast basically follows suit. Once one gives in to the film's tone, it becomes worth watching, even if the reveal comes too early, diffusing most of the potential suspense.

Overall, this is a strong, entertaining, genre-defying film, but it's not perfect. Jim H Super Reviewer. Apr 07, Another great performance by the underrated William Holden bolsters this POW film that finds the elusive mix between dark comedy and serious drama.
